Leaving the Captain Cook Inn

So much for summer on the Oregon Coast, eh? It was pretty gray as we were leaving early enough in the morning to make it to Astoria by 1pm...

Breakfast in Hebo

We stopped in Hebo for breakfast at this little diner...A great, big meal, so Marcus ate half of mine along with his!...

Tillamook Cheese Factory

About halfway from Lincoln City to Astoria is the Tillamook Cheese Factory...Very good cheese...you can usually find it as a more expensive cheese around the West Coast for sure, but Marcus had never heard of it, so I guess it probably doesn't get out of the country...At the very least, a good place to stretch your legs, get some cheese if you like, and see how the cheese is made...Marcus took some pictures of the packing line in the factory, too...

View from the Manzanita Cliffs

Marcus' guidebook for the Pacific Northwest had us on the lookout for Manzanita, since it said the most spectacluar cliffs were there...I think we probably would have noticed and stopped anyway! This is the view from the cliffs back south along the coast...

Manzanita Cliffs

...and here's me with the cliffs behind me...Pretty dramatic, eh?...

Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach

Cannon Beach is a seaside resort town, and besides the nice beach, it's most famous feature is Haystack Rock, shown here...

Astoria ColumnAstoria Column Zoom

After visiting my dad's mother in Astoria, we went to the top of the hill to see the Astoria Column...

There's a great view of the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Columbia River to the north, and more of Oregon to the south and east, and the mural that spirals around the column itself tells the story of Astoria since the "white man came" in the late 1700's...You can climb about 150 steps to the top..

...and we did! Impressive view, but VERY windy up there!...

Marcus the Photographer

Marcus spends a LONG time composing his shots...I decided he needed to be immortalized doing this...

Fort Clatsop

Marcus and me at Fort Clatsop...This is where Lewis and Clark stayed the winter in their expedition to explore the Louisiana Territory which President Jefferson had just purchased from the French...Jefferson had told them to go all the way to the West Coast, even though the United States didn't own the Oregon Territory at that time...Sneaky Manifest Destiny, I guess?...

Flintlock RifleFlintlock Rifle

At Fort Clatsop in the summer, the park rangers dress in period costumes and give mini-lectures on different topics...This was a demonstration of the flintlock rifle in action...

We finally made it to my other grandmother's house in Edmonds, Washington, about 9:30 that evening...
